This is book 2 of Irene’s Marie and the Mouse King series, based on the original Nutcracker novella (not the ballet), but we're way out of canon now, and Irene is doing super interesting things with these characters.
It's the spring after her eventful Christmas, and Marie has been waiting for Lang to return and teach her how to fly. But when he doesn't come back to her on leave, she's not waiting anymore, and she goes in search of him. And a ghost, an army, and Lang's own troubles aren't going to stand in her way.
Fairy tales, fantasy, and romance, with a bit of Ladyhawke thrown in, make this an addictive read. (I love this series.)
